Patent activity related to robotics decreased in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q1 2023

The top five companies accounted for 11% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Boeing filed the most robotics patents within the aerospace, defense & security industry in Q1 2023. The company filed 18 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 25 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Sony Group with 18 robotics patent filings, Wing Aviation (15 filings), and Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) (14 filings) in Q1 2023.

Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the aerospace, defense & security industry was 730 in Q1 2023, versus 1,017 in the prior quarter.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 34% share of total patent filings

The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the aerospace, defense & security industry in Q1 2023 was in China with 34%, followed by South Korea (21%) and Japan (16%). The share represented by China was 12% lower than the 46% share it accounted for in Q4 2022.
