The Latvian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has placed an order with Sweden’s Saab to deliver ammunition for the Latvian Armed Forces’ Carl-Gustaf recoilless rifles.
The estimated value of this order is approximately $17.72m (SEK185m).
It has been awarded as part of the existing framework agreement signed between Saab and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV).
This agreement allows Latvian MoD to procure Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon system as well as its ammunition over a period of next ten years from the time of signing orders.
Under this framework agreement, Saab received a similar order, worth around $18.73m, from the Latvian MoD in 2018.
Apart from Latvia, the framework agreement also allows FMV to make cost effective purchases for the Swedish and Estonian armed forces.
Both Latvia and Estonia ordered Carl-Gustaf M4 systems from Saab in May 2020.
Saab Dynamics business area head Görgen Johansson said: “We are pleased to continue delivering our world-class ground combat capabilities to Latvia.
“This order will support the Latvian National Armed Forces’ ability to meet a wide range of challenges on the modern battlefield.”
Launched in 2014, Saab’s Carl-Gustaf M4 is the latest version of multi-role weapon system.
The man-portable, shoulder-launched system can be used by the soldiers in a wide variety of roles.
It provides high precision and offers compatibility with other future advancements and battlefield technology developments, for instance, intelligent sighting systems and programmable ammunition.
According to Saab, the company is currently under contract with 11 different countries to provide the Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon systems.
Earlier this month, the Latvian MoD placed another order with Saab to procure short-range air defence systems for its military.
