They called me c**p, s**t – Usman Khawaja opens up on English crowd’s aggressive behaviour during Ashes

The recently concluded five-Test match Ashes series will go down in history as one of the most aggressive and entertaining series between England and Australia. The WTC winners won the first two games, while England bounced back and drew the series 2-2, with one game getting washed away with no result because of rain.

Hardly a Test went by without players getting into an altercation among themselves or with the crowd members. There were several controversial moments, such as the long room incident during the Lord’s Test. In recent events, Usman Khawaja opened up on the English crowd’s aggressive behaviour.

Khawaja said that he had the worst crowd experience during the Ashes, and the bazball had a major role in it.

“The crowd was far worse than anything I have experienced. Maybe Bazball’s ideology had an impact, as they seemed more aggressive than ever. I faced some of the strongest language and aggression thrown at me. They said, ‘You’re c**p, s**t, you’re useless, you can’t score runs here’. It felt more like a football crowd.”

Khawaja also shed light on the long room incident and remarked, “I couldn’t believe that a place where they clap for you irrespective of a duck or hundred, they directed aggression. But I also didn’t hold back and stood for myself.”
