Sir, can I bowl slowly?  – When Jasprit Bumrah shocked his former bowling coach during the 2019 Australia tour

One of the biggest drawbacks for the Men in Blue in the past year was star bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s absence due to the back injury he sustained on several occasions from June 2022 till the present. The 29-year-old has emerged as one of the finest fast bowlers in recent times, and even Ricky Ponting described Bumrah as a threat to any opposition because of his sheer determination to bowl at full throttle.

Besides his unorthodox action, Bumrah’s will to bowl at full speed is touted to be another reason behind his frequent injuries. However, former fielding coach R Sridhar, in his new book, coaching beyond, recalled one shocking instance when a tired Bumrah approached then-bowling coach, Bharat Arun, requesting him to grant permission for him to bowl slowly.

“We were playing Australia in Sydney when Bumrah approached Arun and said, ‘Sir, the wicket is dull and has nothing for the fast bowlers. I am physically and mentally tired. The game is likely to end in a draw, so, sir, I will bowl a little slowly. I will give my 100%.’”

Sridhar reckoned that Arun was calm and listened to Bumrah’s concern before pointing out two solutions in front of him, which motivated Bumrah for good.

“Arun stated, ‘You have two solutions. One, bowl slowly and give the batter the confidence to face you, so, when he meets you in the upcoming World Cup, he will have an upper edge over you, despite you being at your 100%. Second, give your best for another one or two spells, then go on a break.’”

The words did wonder to Bumrah, and the MI star bowled at his 100%, revealed Sridhar.
