Former India cricketer Sanjay Bangar has picked Ishan Kishan over KL Rahul as the first-choice wicketkeeper for the Asia Cup. He believes that Kishan should be given the nod because he is a regular wicketkeeper and is in good form.
Rahul, on the other hand, is currently nursing a niggle and is not fully fit. Bangar also pointed out that Rahul is prone to injuries, which could be a concern for the team management.
“Ishan Kishan has done nothing wrong because he has been a regular wicketkeeper,” Bangar stated in an interview with Star Sports. “You want a fit and first-choice wicketkeeper rather than someone who is half-fit or doubtful.”
Bangar also said that Rahul should play as a wicket-keeper batsman, not a specialist batter.
“I believe KL Rahul should play as a keeper-batter rather than a specialist batter because no one bowls in the top five,” Bangar remarked. “If you want six bowling options, one of the top five must be a wicketkeeper. It gives the team the right balance.”
Kishan, who is also a left-handed opener, has been in good form in recent months. He scored three back-to-back half-centuries in the ODI series against West Indies, which India won 2-1.
The 23-year-old will now look to grab the opportunity in the Asia Cup with both hands ahead of the 50-over World Cup, which will be played in India later this year.
