David Warner, the left-handed opener for the Delhi Capitals, has been putting up decent performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with three half-centuries in four games. However, the veteran batsman has been criticized for his sluggish strike rate of 114.83 and is yet to hit a single six in the tournament.
Delhi Capitals’ assistant coach, Shane Watson, has come out in support of Warner, stating that he is very close to being at his aggressive best with the bat and that he will be “blown away” if the player doesn’t set the IPL alight from now on.
Watson, who has played alongside Warner for the Australian cricket team, has been working with him to iron out the technicalities of his game. He believes that Warner is batting nicely but is just mis-hitting a few balls he would normally hit for four or six. Watson added that his scoring rate would go through the roof once Warner found the middle of his bat.
Warner is not taking risks with wickets falling from the other end, but Watson believes he will work through this dilemma and find his way out. Watson emphasized that the beauty of having someone like Ricky Ponting as a coach is his understanding of people and his ability to help the players where they need it, whether skill-wise or mentally.
After four consecutive losses, the Delhi Capitals are at the bottom of the points table, but Watson remains optimistic about the team’s chances. He believes that Mitchell Marsh, the all-rounder who missed the last two games due to his wedding back home in Perth, will be available for the match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore and will be raring to go.
As the Delhi Capitals look to turn their campaign around, the role of the coaching staff that contains some of the stalwarts like Sourav Ganguly, Ricky Pointing, and Shane Watson will be crucial in providing the necessary support and guidance to the players as Delhi are eager and willing to make a comeback.
