‘Chahal was discussed, but…’: Ajit Agarkar on why Kuldeep Yadav was picked over Chahal

In a press conference held on Monday, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar and Captain Rohit Sharma revealed the eagerly awaited India squad for the Asia Cup 2023. Amidst the anticipation and excitement, one notable absence caught the attention of cricket enthusiasts worldwide – Yuzvendra Chahal.

While the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer from injury layoffs was a much-celebrated development, another intriguing inclusion was Tilak Varma, who earned his maiden ODI call-up following an impressive debut performance in the Caribbean tour. However, the most surprising aspect of the announcement was the omission of Chahal, replaced by Kuldeep Yadav. This move was a strategic decision made by the management to ensure a batting option at No. 8, as explained by Agarkar.

“Chahal was discussed, but sometimes the balance of the side had to be considered.” Kuldeep has been excellent, and Axar has performed admirably, but fitting two wrist spinners was difficult, so Chahal had to miss out,” Agarkar told reporters

The Asia Cup 2023 squad also welcomes the return of pacer Prasidh Krishna. Having recently overcome an injury, Krishna made his comeback during the ongoing series in Ireland.

India’s squad for Asia Cup 2023:

Rohit Sharma (captain), Gill, Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Jasprit Bumrah, Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Sanju Samson (back up to Rahul).
