Burnley’s Luca Koleosho faces spell on sidelines with knee injury

Burnley winger Luca Koleosho has been ruled out for an extended period with a significant knee injury.

The 19-year-old suffered the injury in a collision during the first half of Burnley’s 1-0 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Koleosho, who is eligible to play for the United States, Italy, and Canada, has emerged as one of the standout performers at Turf Moor this season.

He arrived from Espanyol for £2.5million this summer with little first team experience but his pace and skill has made him a key attacking option for manager Vincent Kompany.

“Yeah it’s bad news for us. He’s going to be out for a while,” Kompany said.

“We’ll do everything we can to make sure that he gets back healthy and ready to go again and I think the key concern for us is to make sure he doesn’t sustain any long-term damage because he’s still young. We are really going to do everything that’s right by him.

“We think he’s going to be fine in the long-term, but short-term, we have to give him the time to recover. I’d like to think he’ll still play this season but it might be towards the end of the season.”

It is another significant blow for Kompany, who is already without striker Lyle Foster as he continues to receive treatment for his mental health. There remains no return for the South Africa international.

“Lyle’s making good progress,” Kompany said. “I just know that he’s getting good care and he’s in a better place than he was four weeks ago. The most I can say is I’m very hopeful it won’t be too long before he is able to come and help us again.”
