Ben Stokes reveals secret behind Stuart Broad’s selection for first Ashes 2023 Test

Stuart Broad’s selection for the Ashes opener was influenced by his past dominance over David Warner, according to England captain Ben Stokes. Warner struggled against Broad in the 2019 Ashes, getting dismissed seven times with an average of under 10.

Stokes compared Broad’s impact on Warner to Ravichandran Ashwin’s record against him. Despite Warner’s vow to be more aggressive, Australian captain Pat Cummins expressed confidence in Warner’s ability to overcome Broad’s challenge.

During the 2019 Ashes campaign, Warner was troubled by Broad’s deliveries from around the wicket. In 10 innings, the opener was dismissed seven times by the English bowler, resulting in an average of less than 10 for the series.

Stokes admitted that Broad’s dominance over Warner played a significant role in his selection for the Ashes opener.

Stokes acknowledged that he would be dishonest if he denied Broad’s influence on Warner. He drew a parallel between Broad’s impact on Warner and Ashwin’s record against himself. Stokes commended Broad for his unwavering performance over the years and emphasized the challenge of disregarding such a remarkable player in the esteemed Ashes competition.

Warner showed signs of form in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, scoring 43 runs in his first innings. He has vowed to be more aggressive against Broad compared to four years ago. Australian captain Pat Cummins also expressed confidence in Warner’s ability to overcome his long-time nemesis.
