Germany has chosen the Israeli PULS rocket launcher artillery system, which is intended to form the basis for the Bundeswehr’s future long-range indirect fire system.
The PULS system, developed by Elbit Systems, is a cost-effective artillery solution capable of firing various missile types to distances up to 300km.
Germany’s investment in the PULS system reflects its commitment to upgrade and strengthen military capabilities in response to regional security challenges.
As part of a contract worth approximately $57m, (€54.8m) Elbit Systems, together with KNDS Deutschland will supply the systems. This also includes custom adaptations and the integration of German C4I systems.
Additionally, Elbit Systems will provide ongoing in-service support for these systems.
Elbit System Land general manager Yehuda (Udi) Vered said: “This acquisition paves the way for future orders of the Euro-PULS configuration and highlights the strength of our European collaboration with KNDS Deutschland, reflecting our joint-commitment to delivering advanced, operationally proven, flexible, and cost-effective solutions that enhance the operational capabilities of our customers.” .
This procurement is facilitated through trilateral agreements between the governments of the Netherlands, Israel, and Germany.
The German procurement agency BAAINBw, along with technical test centres, will conduct testing to ensure the systems meet the standards required for active service.
KNDS CEO Ralf Ketzel said: “The cooperation between Elbit Systems and KNDS Deutschland marks a milestone in the development of a European Indirect Fire System for rockets. Elbit’s technology meets the European systems know-how of KNDS.
“As the OEM for European land systems such as the Leopard 2 and PzH 2000, KNDS will ensure that the PULS Systems becomes the EuroPULS. The common joint venture, EuroPULS, is the proper approach to cooperate on eyelevel as partner.”
The EuroPULS variant, marketed in Europe through a partnership between Elbit Systems and KNDS, has an open-architecture design, allowing the Advanced Launcher Module to be mounted on diverse platforms.
In 2023, Elbit Systems and KNDS entered into a teaming agreement to develop the EuroPULS rocket artillery launcher.
This system is designed to accommodate third-party munitions, enabling it to launch rockets manufactured by different original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
As of 30 September 2024, Elbit Systems reported revenues of approximately $1.7bn and an order backlog totalling around $22.1bn.
