In 2019, after modifications, the redesigned system began successfully capturing plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. By 2021, the third version, System 002, had removed thousands of pounds of debris from the oceans.
One of Slat’s most ambitious solutions is “The Interceptor,” a river-cleaning system designed to address the source of the problem. Research shows that 1,000 rivers contribute to nearly 80% of the plastic entering oceans. By deploying Interceptors in some of the world’s most polluted rivers, from Indonesia to Los Angeles, The Ocean Cleanup aims to prevent this plastic from ever reaching the seas.
