Indian pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah‘s outstanding performance against Pakistan in the 2023 World Cup has garnered praise from former coach Ravi Shastri.
After a match-winning effort that saw Bumrah secure figures of 2/19 in seven overs, Shastri commended the bowler’s exceptional ability to read the game and adapt accordingly. Bumrah is the leading wicket-taker with eight wickets in three games, with an average of 11.62 and an economy rate of 3.44.
Speaking to Star Sports post-game, Shastri highlighted Bumrah’s commitment to improvement as the key factor behind his success.
“Jasprit Bumrah is still with the bowling coaches. He will not leave the analysts, he will go watch everything, and he wants to develop; that is his hunger, and that is why he is where he is now. He wants to get better,” he said.
“Another very fascinating thing Bumrah said, ‘I have a fantastic slow ball, and I believe this would be a good match-up to interrupt the rhythm of a guy like Rizwan who plays on the run and sometimes plays away from his body,’” he added.
“One of his greatest strengths is his ability to analyze opponents, understand batsmen, and adjust to the playing conditions. He quickly adjusted his length without having a slip in place. He was very clear about attacking the stumps, maintaining a back-of-the-length delivery, denying any room to the batsman, and utilizing subtle variations,” stated Shastri.
“It’s intelligent thinking. He hasn’t risen to the top so rapidly for nothing. He’s a clever operator. Besides possessing exceptional skills, he has the right mindset to succeed,” he concluded.
Throughout the first three games of the World Cup, Bumrah’s red-hot form has played a pivotal role in India’s victories.
