“I’m a dad first and a player second: Trent Boult on playing as a freelance cricketer

Trent Boult recently returned to New Zealand for the upcoming tour of England. He played his last international game in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, following which he took part in the T20 leagues across the globe.

He had turned down the central contract but continues to be a part of the national team in crucial tournaments.

In 2023, he competed in the International League T20 (ILT20), the Indian Premier League (IPL), and the Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA. He took 23 wickets for MI New York in MLC as his franchise won the title.

“Nice to be back for New Zealand. It was not easy to move away from the national team. I respected the fact that I have played a lot for my country and want to make the most of the my remaining years as a bowler,” he told reporters.

When asked whether he will play as a freelance cricketer after the ICC World Cup 2023 or return to New Zealand cricket with a central contract, he said:

“I don’t know. I am a dad first and a cricketer second.”
