Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan need to convert their starts into substantial scores: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra has drawn attention to Ishan Kishan’s indifferent performance in T20I cricket, emphasizing the need for the young batter to step up for his spot in the playing XI.

The upcoming second T20I of the five-match series against the West Indies in Providence, Guyana on Sunday, August 6, presents a critical opportunity for Kishan to prove himself.

In the series opener, Kishan could only manage six runs in India’s four-run defeat. As the Men in Blue gear up for the second T20I, the pressure is on Kishan to deliver a substantial performance and contribute significantly to the team’s success.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel while previewing the upcoming match, Aakash Chopra explained, “Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan will both need to convert their starts into substantial scores. Ishan Kishan’s T20I statistics are not promising. It is similar to the case of Suryakumar Yadav in ODIs. So, if you are getting opportunities now, you must take advantage of them.”

Aakash Chopra further elaborated on the potential scenario, stating, “You must play significantly longer knocks. If not, the question of whether Sanju (Samson) or Yashasvi (Jaiswal) can open may arise. It’ll be a lefty replacing a lefty, simple narrative, and Sanju can keep. So, in my perspective, this is a critical game for Ishan Kishan.”

Kishan’s T20I performance statistics reflect that he has struggled to make a significant impact. In 28 T20I innings, he has aggregated 659 runs at an indifferent average of 24.40. The current year has been particularly challenging for him, managing only 70 runs in seven knocks at a dismal average of 10.00.
