British Army Land Zone focuses on training Ukrainian troops

The highly anticipated Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) is set to return to the ExCeL venue in London next month.

Scheduled to take place from the 12-15 September, this annual event promises to bring together leading figures and cutting-edge technologies from the defence and security sectors. DSEI is set to draw in prominent companies both from the UK and overseas.

The exhibition will showcase cutting-edge advancements in land-based technology, with a particular focus on the latest developments in high-mobility defence vehicles, lightweight yet resilient armour, and respiratory equipment designed to cater to the unique needs of armed forces operating in specialised environments.

The Land Zone, backed by the British Army, is set to make a significant impact at DSEI as it delves into the cutting-edge advancements within the Land domain. The Zone is set to become a hub of innovation as it prepares to host a lineup of 73 exhibitors. These exhibitors, handpicked for their cutting-edge solutions, are poised to present a wide array of groundbreaking technologies that address the ever-evolving challenges faced in modern warfare.

British Army’s focus on training Ukrainian troops

In the wake of the Ukraine conflict, the United Kingdom has stepped up its support by providing crucial assistance to Ukrainian forces. This aid comes in the form of essential equipment, including top-of-the-line Challenger 2 tanks manufactured by Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land, Mastiff patrol vehicles developed by General Dynamics, and the highly efficient NLAW light anti-tank weapons produced by Saab. DSEI will feature the exhibition of all the organisations involved in the development of this equipment.

The British Army has taken on the responsibility of training Ukrainian soldiers on British soil. Over a large scale of operations, approximately 10,000 personnel are being trained every 120 days, as part of a collaborative effort. At the upcoming DSEI event, the UK Army is set to place significant emphasis not only improving military capabilities but also revolutionise the training of armed forces, both presently and in the years to come.

“This is not all about mere platforms or numbers of soldiers, but includes strengthened stockpiles, true readiness and a resilience in the supply chain that will allow for a sustained use of force.”

Rear Admiral (Ret’d) Jon Pentreath

Rear Admiral (Ret’d) Jon Pentreath, the Senior Military Adviser (Land) for DSEI, emphasised the pressing need to modernise the United Kingdom’s land forces in light of the escalating conflict in Ukraine. “The war in Ukraine has increased the urgency of modernising the UK’s land forces, ensuring that combined arms warfare can be fought effectively.  This is not all about mere platforms or numbers of soldiers, but includes strengthened stockpiles, true readiness and a resilience in the supply chain that will allow for a sustained use of force. The Army’s response to these challenges will be on full display at DSEI 2023, not only on the show floor but importantly also in the conceptual space in the keynote addresses and other conference sessions.

“The British Army will focus on the Land Operating Concept and being a net contributor to the multi-domain enterprise at DSEI. This will be viewed through the lens of delivering the capabilities we need now and, in the future, and on continuing to build the broad alliances to protect our vital national and international interests.”

DSEI line-up

Grant Burgham, the Director of DSEI, expressed his gratitude towards the British Army for their support of the Land Zone at DSEI 2023. The platform offers a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the advancements and groundbreaking innovations showcased by exhibitors from the United Kingdom and around the world. “In addition to companies within the zone, it’s great to see companies from the land domain across the DSEI floor space with Saab, Rheinmetall and Thales all planning a significant presence.”

Mercedes Benz Trucks UK will return to the upcoming event after a notable absence spanning 12 years to showcase the company’s high-mobility defence trucks. These vehicles have been designed to cater to the unique operational and environmental requirements of various missions. Among the lineup is the Mercedes-Benz Zetros, an off-road truck specifically engineered to excel in the most challenging and extreme conditions.

The showcased products at the event will also include Chemical, Radiological, Biological, and Nuclear (CBRN) protection solutions, which are deemed crucial for mission success. Additionally, the event will feature the complete lineup of Team Wendy ballistic head protection systems.
