Man of the Match Usman Khawaja creates a new record in Ashes 2023

Australia defeated England by 2 wickets in the opening Ashes 2023 Test. Captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon added more than 50 runs for the 9th wicket to seal the game in their team’s favour.

Usman Khawaja scored a fifty to keep the visitors in the hunt. He became the 2nd Australian to bat all five days in a Test match. Usman was named the Man of the Match.

Notably, Khawaja came to bat on the first day when England declared for 393. Further, he remained unbeaten on the second day and smashed a century before getting out on the third day. Further, the hosts tumbled on the fourth day, as a result, the southpaw came to bat on the fourth day as well.

Also, Usman is the third player to achieve the feat in an Ashes Test after Geoff Boycott at Trent Bridge, in 1977 and Rory Burns at Edgbaston in 2019. In Australian history, the 36-year-old is the second player after Kim Hughes to complete his amazing red-ball Test. Hughes did the same against England at Lord’s in 1980.
