It has been two days since India suffered a humiliating 209-run defeat against Australia at the WTC finals, and the players have a month-long rest before focusing on the bilateral series against West Indies. Meanwhile, the Rohit Sharma-led side are still under scrutiny, as several experts have constantly targeted the management over their under-preparation.
Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar, who slammed the players and head coach Rahul Dravid during the post-match show, has launched a fresh rant, where he defended R Ashwin and took a dig at Rohit Sharma, and Dravid for dropping the No.1 ranked Test bowler out of the team.
Further, Gavaskar made a bold claim and remarked that no other Indian cricketer has received more baffling treatment than Ashwin.
“India dropped Ashwin, who is the No.1 ranked bowler, despite Australia featuring five left-handers. One leftie got a hundred, while another scored a fifty in the second innings. If Ashwin was in the team, who knows he could have added runs with the bat. No other Indian cricketer has been treated as bafflingly as Ashwin.”
“I want to know that if there was a No.1 ranked Test batter in the side, would he have been left out of the playing XI had he not scored runs on a green pitch? Definitely not, so why Ashwin?”
Further, Gavaskar pointed out the 36-year-old off-spinner’s decent record in England and stated that Ashwin could have played 100 Test games till now had he not dropped like this in England.
“It is not wise. It has become a pattern of leaving Ashwin out in England. He could have easily got to 100 Test games by now.”
