After Babar Azam produced a string of poor results as captain in 2022, there were reports that the PCB, who at that time underwent several changes at the top level, were looking to sack Babar and introduce split captaincy. The rumours spread to the level that Shan Masood was touted to lead the side in limited overs, while Sarfaraz Ahmed, who made his comeback, was rumoured to lead in red-ball cricket.
Three months into this year, Babar continues to lead the side but the 28-year-old has faced criticism. Several experts are still demanding his ouster, including Mohammad Amir, who recently stated that Babar was handed the captaincy early on in his career.
In the latest development, PCB chairman Najam Sethi delighted Babar fans when he remarked that the skipper has no threat from the board and he won’t be removed as the captain of the Pakistan National Team unless he himself decides to give up on his responsibilities.
“There is no threat to Babar. He will continue to lead Pakistan, until he himself decides to leave the captaincy in one or all formats.”
Recently, PCB announced the squad list for a three-match T20I tour against Afghanistan, for which Babar has been rested, and Shadab Khan will lead in his absence.
